Frequently Asked Questions

Where did you get all the photographs?

The collection was compiled over several decades by Joe Horton, a Nashville photographer, who loved Nashville and wanted to preserve its history through photographs. You can read more about him and the collection on our About Us page.

I've noticed you have some non-Nashville images, what's up with that?

You know, we wonder that ourselves from time to time. The truth of it is we really don't have a clue. It is possible some of the images were brought in to be copied or restored and were interesting enough to Mr. Horton that he wanted to keep them. Some we suspect he may have shot himself while traveling or was hired to do and no one remembers the story.

What type of paper are the images printed on?

We print our images on an Epson photographic grade archival presentation paper with a matte finish. It is a heavyweight bright white paper which yields highly saturated images with no gloss while maintaining excellent shadow and highlight detail.

Do you use some kind of special ink?

We utilize a professional grade 8-color pigmented ink printer using Epson UltraChrome K3 photographic quality inks. This particular ink set incorporates three unique levels of black which yield dramatic black and white prints improving overall gray balance while enhancing mid tone and highlight details. The result is black and white prints with the look and feel of traditional photographs.

How long will these prints last?

Both the heavyweight paper and photographic grade inks we use are considered archival quality. Accelerated industry testing resulted in lightfastness ratings of  over 200 years for the black and white inks. Needless to say any print from us if framed under glass or stored properly with be around for a long, long time.

Can I have an image custom printed?

Most of the images we have available can be custom printed. We can print varying image sizes on 8x10, 11x14, 16x20 & 20x30 paper or can custom crop an image to enhance a particular focal point. We can also print an image with a sepia tone finish. We will work with designers to meet needs of their clients as well as businesses and individuals looking to decorate their offices or homes.

What does the finished print look like?

Since the original negatives or photographs vary in size the images on our prints will vary as well. We strive to keep the aspect ratios true to the original whenever possible. Generally we strive for the actual image area to constitute at least 60% of the paper size, with the remaining area being a white border. Every print will be hand signed and include some specific information about the image. Click here to see an example.

Is the JHS logo going to show on my prints?

Absolutely not. We just add that watermark to help identify our digital images and to protect them from any unauthorized online use.
